South Dakota

South Dakota is widely known as a rich and diverse area for hunting. With grasslands, river bottoms, forests, and more—the land itself offers plenty of options for hunters. From big and small game to waterfowl and furbearers, hunters can find a wealth of wildlife to satisfy their passion for hunting. To participate in this state’s hunting seasons, make sure that you follow the rules and regulations for safe hunting!

South Dakota has several hunting seasons for deer, antelope, mountain lions, and other types of wild game. Key hunting dates are available for each type of wildlife. Before joining with other hunters during the season, you must obtain your hunting license. First, make sure to complete your HuntSAFE hunter education course. Take your education online or in-person to learn the staples for safe hunting. After course completion, you can move forward with purchasing your hunting licenses.

Resident and nonresident hunting licenses are available, as well as fishing licenses. Other specialty licenses can also be obtained, including youth licenses, senior licenses, and those for military, veterans, or disabled individuals.
