New York

Residents of New York and non-residents alike can join in the state hunting season. Whether you are interested in hunting large or small game, trapping furbearers, or searching for a range of game birds, you are sure to find satisfaction in the wide variety that New York has to offer. From state parks to public lands, there are plenty of hunting locations to choose from.

All hunters and trappers 12 years and older are required to complete a hunter or trapper education class. Different programs are available depending on the type of game hunted and the type of weapon used. While hunters may participate in in-person education with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)-certified instructors, an online hunter education course and an online bowhunter education course are now available, as well.

Upon completion of the appropriate course, you can receive your hunting license. This may be purchased in person through a license issuing agent, online, or by phone. In addition to one’s general license, free or reduced fee licenses are available for active duty military, military veterans, junior hunters, and more.
