Iowa

Hunting in Iowa is a treasured and popular pastime. However, those who want to partake in this pastime must follow specific laws and regulations. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources enforces these for licensed hunters.

Both residential and nonresidential hunters who wish to hunt in Iowa must be properly licensed. To do this, hunters must complete a hunter's education course and register for the Harvest Information Program (HIP) if they intend to hunt doves and other migratory birds. Registering can be done through the Go Outdoors Iowa smartphone app or this link

Hunters born after January 1, 1972, and over 12 years of age must complete a hunter's education course. Iowa does recognize hunter's education courses completed in other states and some countries. When purchasing a hunter's license, hunters must provide proof of a completed hunter's education course.

This education course covers many of the vital regulations hunters must follow. Course information covers bag limits, county-specific rules for deer hunting, quotas, and similar information. With so many laws in place, the hunter's education course is a fantastic resource for new and experienced hunters alike. We encourage all hunters to check the rules and regulations annually for any changes, regardless of experience level. Informed and conscious hunting helps promote safe hunting practices for everyone.
