Delaware

Delaware is known for a rich hunting season for squirrels, pheasant, foxes, and more. With 19 public wildlife areas regulated by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), hunters can enjoy a wide variety of game throughout the state. These seasons, delineated by the type of game hunted and method of hunting, typically span from September to February.

To legally participate in Delaware’s hunting season, all hunters must possess a Delaware hunting license or License Exempt Number (LEN). Licenses are available for hunting and trapping, recreational fishing, and conservation access. Federal Migratory Bird Hunting Stamps are also required for hunters aged 16 years and older. Seniors, children, and other special exceptions may be exempt from needing a hunting license, though a free LEN is still required.

To obtain one’s license, hunters and trappers born after January 1, 1967, must complete a basic hunter education course. All resident and non-resident hunters born after January 1, 1967, must complete a 10-hour course. Resident and non-resident trappers born after January 1, 1978, must complete a 6-hour course. After finishing the necessary education and receiving their licenses, hunters are eligible to hunt or trap for one calendar year before renewing their license.
